TEAK is very easy to care for. In fact, unfinished TEAK requires almost no care or maintenance at all, which is one reason it's so popular. Its natural resistance to mold, rot, splitting or cracking means that TEAK can be left exposed to the elements year-round without ill effect.

New TEAK furniture often has a slight surface sheen. This sheen is from the rich oil that naturally occurs in the wood. This surface sheen will be washed away after a short time outdoors. Within the wood, however, oils and resins remain and contribute to its lasting durability.

As it ages, unfinished TEAK changes color to a handsome silvery hue (see right) that is a mark of true outdoor furniture. The golden brown color of new TEAK can be preserved with effort and certain readily available products, or simply by varnishing the wood. However, the silver-gray color is traditional and requires almost no maintenance or upkeep.

To clean unfinished TEAK simply scrub with a solution of mild soap and water. For tough stains, use a solution of one part chlorine bleach to three parts water. Rinse with clean water after scrubbing. Non-metal scrubbing pads can be used, but pressure washers are not recommended as the strong spray may damage the surface of the wood.
